Johnson Island is an ice-covered island, about 9 nautical miles (17 km) long and 5 nautical miles (9 km) wide, lying within Abbot Ice Shelf, about 14 nautical miles (26 km) southeast of Dustin Island. The feature was observed and roughly positioned as an "ice rise" by parties from the USS Glacier in February 1961. Remapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from U.S. Navy air photos, 1966. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Theodore L. Johnson, electrical engineer at Byrd Station, 1964-65.
